    Most Common Languages (2026 Statistics)

English reached 1.53 billion total speakers in 2026, making it the most common language in the world. But 74% of those speakers learned it as a second language. Mandarin Chinese still leads with 941 million native speakers, and 43% of the world’s 7,168 living languages are now classified as endangered. Here’s what the latest data from Ethnologue, W3Techs, and Duolingo tells us about global language distribution.

Key Most Common Languages Statistics (2026)

    • English has 1.53 billion total speakers across 188 countries, with 1.14 billion of them being L2 speakers.
    • Mandarin Chinese leads in native speakers at 941 million, roughly 2.4 times the native English-speaking population.
    • Spanish has 486 million native speakers, about 96 million more than English’s 390 million.
    • English accounts for 49.6% of all website content, while Chinese sits at just 1.2% despite having over 1.1 billion speakers.
    • Around 3,078 languages (43% of all living languages) are classified as endangered, with one going extinct approximately every 40 days.

What Are the Most Common Languages by Total Speakers?

The ranking below counts both native (L1) and second-language (L2) speakers. English sits at the top with 1.53 billion, but its profile is unusual. Nearly three-quarters of its speakers acquired it as a second language. Mandarin’s speaker base is the opposite: 83% are native speakers.

Arabic’s total is complicated by dialect fragmentation. Modern Standard Arabic has zero native speakers. Every Arabic speaker grows up with a local dialect and picks up MSA through formal schooling. Portuguese, often left out of “big language” discussions, has 232 million native speakers, and 95% of them live in Brazil.

Most Common Languages on the Internet by Website Content

The gap between how many people speak a language and how much web content exists in it is stark. English makes up 49.6% of the top 10 million most-visited websites. Hindi, with 609 million speakers, doesn’t crack the top 10 for web content. Arabic, at 422 million speakers, accounts for just 0.6%.

German punches well above its weight here: 134 million speakers but 6.0% of all websites. Russian, ninth globally by total speakers (255 million), holds 3.6% of web content. Chinese appears at just 1.2%, a striking mismatch for a language spoken by over a billion people.

What Is the Most Common Language to Study?

Duolingo’s 2025 report, drawing on data from 110 million monthly active users, confirms English as the most studied language worldwide. It ranked first in 154 countries, up from 135 the prior year. That means English is the top studied language in 79% of all tracked countries, up from 69% two years earlier.

Korean and Japanese are locked in a close competition among culture-driven learners. In China, 32% of Duolingo users studying Japanese said they were doing it for fun. If you’re considering picking up a new language, language exchange programs can speed up the process alongside apps like Duolingo.

Most Common Languages by Native Speakers Only

Stripping away L2 speakers reshuffles the ranking. Mandarin takes first by a wide margin at 941 million. English drops to third behind Spanish.

Spanish’s 486 million native speakers make it the second-largest language by this measure. French, with just 79 million native speakers, may seem small by comparison. But some demographers project it will become one of the most widely spoken languages by 2100, driven by population growth in French-speaking African nations.

    How Many Languages Are Endangered?

The top 10 most common languages aren’t going anywhere. But they share the planet with roughly 7,168 living languages, and 43% of those, around 3,078, are now classified as endangered. The Catalogue of Endangered Languages estimates one language goes extinct every 40 days.

Oceania has the highest concentration of endangered languages at 733, followed by Africa at 428. In the United States, 98% of Indigenous languages are classified as endangered. Some recovery efforts have worked: Māori went from 5% of Māori schoolchildren speaking it in the 1970s to 25% today. Hawaiian grew from about 2,000 speakers to 18,700 by 2023 after being added to school curricula. Tools like dialect translators are one small way technology helps preserve language variation.
