Top 5 Language Exchange Activities to Build Rapport and Learn Fast

    Jane PardoBy Jane PardoAugust 28, 2024Updated:September 10, 2024No Comments4 Mins Read

I surveyed language learners to uncover what works best for language partners.

Based on their responses, I’ve compiled a list of engaging activities for you and your language exchange buddy to try together, as well as tips for building lasting language-learning partnerships.

5 Best Activities for Language Exchange Partners

    1. Themed Conversations
    2. Language-Learning Games
    3. Song Discussions
    4. Book Reading Sessions
    5. Neighborhood Tours

The best language exchange activities are themed conversations, language-learning games, song discussions, book reading sessions, and neighborhood tours.

Once you’ve found a learning buddy through language exchange programs, follow these language exchange ideas to make your experience fun and memorable.

    1. Themed Conversations

Focused conversations with a native speaker or someone fluent in your target language will build your everyday vocabulary and enhance your speaking skills.

    • Divide your speaking time, ensuring you and your language partner each have enough time to talk in your native languages.
    • Prepare a theme and relevant language exchange conversation topics for every session. For example, explore your favorite sports, hobbies, local cultures, or food.
    • Share your screen to show photos or videos for better visualization.

A language learner who has successfully maintained a four-year partnership emphasized the importance of making your partner feel comfortable, avoiding harsh criticism, and offering gentle feedback to encourage progress.

Pro Tip: Use a random question generator if you run out of topics or don’t want to stick to a particular conversation theme.

    2. Language-Learning Games

A study involving ESL students suggests that language learning games greatly improve vocabulary retention and boost motivation among learners.

They promote fun and relaxation, ease stress, and provide immediate results, making them perfect for language exchange sessions.

Many language learners use these interactive language learning games:

    • Scrabble
    • Skribbl (an online alternative to Pictionary)
    • Kloo
    • Mad Libs
    • Charades
    • Vocabulary Bingo

Bonus Game: Try a role-playing game to practice real-life scenarios. For example, pretend you’re a tourist visiting the U.S. and your language buddy is a tour guide.

    3. Song Discussions

Discussing songs will expand your vocabulary, improve your pronunciation, and even grow your musical collection!

Many language learners love to learn informal expressions through songs.

    • Watch a music video together on YouTube. Then, search the lyrics online and explain what the song means. (And if your singing voice isn’t your strong suit, maybe stick to humming—it’s universal in any language!)
    • Let your language partner explain the parts you got wrong. Discuss what each of you likes and doesn’t like about the song overall.

Keep singing the new songs you learned to reinforce your language skills.

Although fair warning, you might find yourself serenading your cat with foreign love ballads at 2 am.

    4. Book Reading Sessions

Read aloud a book, news article, blog post, comic book, or anything you or your language partner find interesting.

This language exchange exercise improves grammar, pronunciation, and cadence.

It also lets you discover problem areas and keeps the two of you engaged without worrying about conversation starters.

    • Pick books with side-by-side translations to understand texts more easily. Or suggest interesting books to each other.
    • Explain what you read using your target language.
    • Tell your language exchange buddy to correct your mistakes once you’re done reading and explaining.

    5. Neighborhood Tours

Wander around your neighborhood while describing your surroundings and encouraging your language partner to ask about things they see.

This activity is perfect for phone video calls. For in-person meetings, visit popular tourist destinations in your area.

    • Share personal stories, historical facts, or cultural anecdotes as you pass by landmarks and other notable locations.
    • Share relevant words and phrases with your language exchange partner before doing the tour and use them as often as possible to solidify new vocabulary.

Build a Genuine Connection for Lasting Language Exchange Partnerships

The language exchange activities I suggested above are excellent starting points for discovering what fits you and your partner.

Just remember to set goals and maintain clear communication throughout your language exchange journey.

Get creative and experiment with different things. Who knows? You may end up gaining a new friend while learning a new language!
