There is no combined grade. The certificate carries one TDN result per skill, and the total scale runs to 80 points across the four sections.
How Many Candidates Reach TDN 4 in Every Section?
Admission is guaranteed under the framework regulations for German language examinations when a candidate reaches at least TDN 4 in all four parts. Since 2001, 22.8% of participants have met that bar, while 65.4% have earned a certificate with TDN 3 or better everywhere.

Annual participation rose every year from 2001 to 2017, then fell by roughly half in 2020. The 49,567 recorded in 2017 remains the highest annual figure in the published series.

Learners from 189 countries had sat the test by the end of 2023. China leads the cumulative count with 189,361 participants, or 34.7%, ahead of the Russian Federation on 31,124 (5.7%) and Turkey on 23,947 (4.4%).

Digital vs Paper-Based TestDaF Exam Structure and Scoring
Both versions still run, and both use the same TDN bands. The digital format packs more receptive items into less reading time and splits writing into two tasks instead of one.

Fees outside Germany are not published centrally. g.a.s.t. sets three country price groups, and US candidates get the applicable price from their test centre or at online registration.
Sections cannot be taken separately, and a certificate is issued only when all four parts are completed. The test can be repeated as often as needed. Between attempts, a German verb conjugator and a word counter for German drafts cover two of the mechanical gaps that cost points in writing.
