Spanish stressed syllables follow systematic rules
If a word ends in a vowel or the letters ‘n’ or ‘s’, stress falls on the penultimate syllable; if it ends with other consonants, stress falls on the last syllable.
Deviations from these patterns require a written accent mark (tilde) on the stressed vowel. Unstressed syllables do not carry a written accent.
Words are classified based on stress position:
- Agudas: Stress on the last syllable; take a tilde if ending in a vowel, ‘n’, or ‘s’.
- Llanas (Graves): Stress on the penultimate syllable; take a tilde if ending in consonants other than ‘n’ or ‘s’.
- Esdrújulas: Stress on the antepenultimate syllable; always carry a tilde.
- Sobreesdrújulas: Stress before the antepenultimate syllable; always carry a tilde.
Understanding accentuation rules allows for correct pronunciation and meaning in Spanish.
