Gimkit One Way Out puts students on a spaceship overrun by evil plants. Every player has to make it to the escape pods alive — no one gets left behind. Released on March 30, 2023, it’s one of the few Gimkit modes built entirely around group success rather than individual scores, and it runs for up to 90 minutes.
What Is Gimkit One Way Out?
One Way Out is a cooperative 2D Player vs. Environment mode set on a spaceship called the Alphastar. Players answer questions to earn energy, which lets them move. They fight through three sectors filled with enemy plants, collect gate keys, and work toward the escape pods at the end of the map.
The game ends only when every single player reaches the escape pods. If anyone gets left behind, it keeps going. That mechanic is what separates One Way Out from competitive Gimkit 2D game modes — the win condition is collective, not individual.
Gadget costs scale with the number of players in the session, so larger classes pay more per weapon but have more people to cover ground and fight enemies.
How to Host Gimkit One Way Out

The game takes a moment to load after launch. What you see on your screen depends on whether you joined as a player or a spectator. For a closer look at lobby controls and live monitoring options, the Gimkit host guide covers the full dashboard in detail.
What Students Do in Gimkit One Way Out
Once the game loads, here’s how play works:
- Answer questions to earn energy and keep moving through the ship.
- Defeat enemy plants to collect cash and green key cards.
- Spend cash at weapon stations to upgrade gadgets and unlock bridges.
- Buy checkpoints and teleporters as a team — skipping these is a major setback if anyone dies.
- Switch between movement mode and gadget mode using the toggle at the bottom of the screen, or press 1 and 2 on a keyboard.
- Click or tap to fire. Keyboard users should move with WASD to keep the right hand free for aiming.
The session ends when every player reaches the final escape pods together. Unlike Gimkit assignments, there’s no individual completion — the group finishes as one.
Gadgets Available in Gimkit One Way Out
There are five weapons in One Way Out. The Zapper comes free at spawn; the rest are purchased with cash earned during the game. Costs listed below are base prices for a single player — they multiply by the total number of players in the session.

The Quantum Portal is the strongest value buy — it can one-hit most standard enemies at common rarity. The Evil Eye has a faster fire rate but lower damage per shot, making it situational in later sectors.
Host Settings for Gimkit One Way Out
| Goal | Setting to Adjust |
|---|---|
| Harder, faster session | Raise difficulty, lower player health |
| Longer, more relaxed game | Lower difficulty, raise player health |
| More question answering | Reduce energy earned per correct answer |
One Way Out runs for a maximum of 90 minutes before it auto-ends. For a full class period with younger students, lower difficulty and higher health tends to keep the session moving without frustration.
Exploring the One Way Out Map
The Alphastar ship is large. There are three sectors, each ending in a cluster room followed by a checkpoint area with free Shield Cans, Med Kits, and a purchasable teleporter back to spawn.
The map also has secret rooms, hidden messages, and optional objectives. Three pink enemy plants above the library drop golden key cards, which unlock a secret room in the Sector 2 checkpoint. Ten purple key cards are hidden across the full map and lead to a bonus boss encounter.
Only the starting zone and the opening section of Stage One are shared publicly — Gimkit intentionally keeps the rest for players to discover. If you enjoy this format, Gimkit Don’t Look Down follows a similar 2D layout. For teachers deciding on a plan, Gimkit Pro covers which modes require a paid account.
If students hit connection problems mid-session, checking for Gimkit packet loss issues is a good first step before restarting.
